149 growers reported to grow state cannabis for the cannabis test. That reports the Ministry of Health. The cannabis experiment is an alternative to the tolerance policy. It is being investigated whether the sale of state cannabis in regulated coffee shops works in ten participating municipalities.

The applications are now being assessed by the government. The ten growers are expected to be announced in early 2021. After which the growers can legally supply weed to coffee shops designated by the state. The cannabis candidates had to submit a cultivation proposal and safety and business plans. Applicants are also tested for integrity.

Alternative to tolerance policy

Dutch tolerance policy is obsolete. Selling cannabis, the cultivation and purchase of which is prohibited, can no longer be justified. This cannabis is inseparable from the criminal circuit. To limit this, the cannabis test may offer some relief. The cultivation, purchase and sale of state cannabis will soon be completely legal, with which cannabis may be taken from the criminal corner.
