A striking arrest in Nigeria is sparking debate worldwide. A 63-year-old woman was detained at Lagos International Airport after authorities reportedly found over 31 kilograms of cannabis in her luggage.
According to Nigerian drug authorities, the woman arrived from Thailand via Dubai. During a check, two large suitcases containing the cannabis were reportedly inspected. According to the authorities, the shipment consisted of so-called “Canadian Loud,” a term often used for potent cannabis strains originating from or linked to the Canadian market.
The woman stated during questioning that she works as a caregiver in Malaysia and that the trip was paid for by her daughter. Additionally, she reportedly indicated that the suitcases were handed to her at an airport in Thailand with the intention of delivering them in Nigeria.
The authorities did not accept that statement and decided to arrest her immediately. The investigation into the origin and destination of the shipment is still ongoing.
The case is attracting international attention due to the age of the suspect and the size of the seizure. At the same time, it raises renewed questions about the global smuggling routes used for cannabis and other narcotics.
In addition to this case, the Nigerian authorities announced that they also seized millions of pills of the opioid Tapentadol during a separate operation that same week.
For the time being, it remains unclear what punishment the woman faces, but it is clear that the case is not yet closed.
