Amazon removes cannabis testing requirement from job applicants

Weed smokers eager to work at Amazon in non-transport-related roles can take their breath away, given the company's recent announcement that it will no longer test cannabis candidates.

That means that a few puffs on a cannabis joint in the weeks, days or hours before applying for a job will not affect the application. These are positions that are not regulated by the US Department of Transportation – where a cannabis test will not negatively affect whether or not a person is hired. Previously, such applicants to operational positions at Amazon in the US were disqualified if they tested positive for cannabis use.

Amazon changes cannabis testing policy

“We will no longer include marijuana in our comprehensive drug screening program for positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation, and will instead treat it the same as alcohol consumption,” said Dave Clark, Amazon's CEO of Worldwide Consumer.

The policy change at Amazon comes as cannabis legalization is allowed in more and more states of the US. Amazon has offices in a handful of states and has fulfillment centers in nearly all 50 states. Marijuana is legal in 16 states and Washington, DC and medical marijuana is legal in 36 states.
