Drug lord Pablo Escobar's hidden money found in apartment wall

A cousin of notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, shot in 1993, has said he found a plastic bag of $ 18 million (€ 15.5 million) money hidden in the wall of one of his uncle's homes.

Nicolas Escobar claimed that a "vision" told him exactly where to look for the money in the Medellin apartment where he now lives, according to reports.

Escobar told Colombian media it was not the first time he had found cash in his uncle's shelters, where he had kept it while dodging arrests.

He also said he had discovered a gold pen, satellite phones, typewriter and an undeveloped roll of film.

Some "smelly money" banknotes are unusable

Some of the decades-old banknotes had expired and were no longer usable, said Nicolás Escobar, who has lived in the apartment for five years.

“The smell [behind the wall] was amazing. A smell that was 100 times worse than something that had died. ”

In the interview, he said that he accompanied his uncle on many occasions and that he had once been kidnapped by people looking for Escobar's whereabouts: “I was tortured for seven hours. Two of my workers were attacked with a chainsaw. ”

Escobar fought the Colombian government for decades to avoid extradition to the US and was eventually killed in a shootout with police in 1993.

Who was Pablo Escobar who amassed enormous wealth?

The narcoterrorist formed his cartel in Medellin in the late 1908s and by the 80 he smuggled as much as XNUMX percent of the cocaine sold in the US.

Nicknamed the 'King of Cocaine', Escobar became one of the richest men in the world when his company brought in an estimated $ 420 million a week in revenue.

While verifying Escobar's wealth is impossible due to the nature of drug money, estimates run up to $ 30 billion.

Escobar made it to the Forbes list of international billionaires for seven years, from 1987 to 1993.

In 1989 he was ranked as the seventh richest man in the world.

Fascination for “El Patron”: extremely popular

Escobar, who also went through “El Patron”, was arrested by the authorities in 1991 and held in a self-designed prison called the Cathedral, where he could select prisoners and continue his operations.

Officials estimate that the Escobar cartel was responsible for more than 1989 murders between 1993 and 5.000 alone.

But his appreciation for his origins made him popular with a number of Colombians whose support he cultivated by spending large amounts of money and investing in poor neighborhoods in Medellín.

The fascination with Escobar led more than 60 million viewers to watch the Netflix series “Narcos”, which was all about the drug lord for three seasons.

On the show, Escobar was played by Brazilian actor Moura Wagner, who spoke of his relief when he finally stopped playing the role.
