Not a hidden compartment in a shipping container or a speedboat docking at night, but a package among thousands of regular mail shipments. Drug criminals are using regular mail and package flows to smuggle narcotics into the Netherlands. The issue has now reached the attention of the House of Representatives.
From cannabis to synthetic drugs
In early August, De Telegraaf reported on how various types of drugs reach the Netherlands via regular parcel flows. It reportedly does not involve one specific drug or one fixed route. Cannabis, ketamine, methamphetamine, and other substances can be sent via parcel services.
For criminals, this method of transport has a significant advantage: the enormous number of normal packages makes full control practically impossible.
At the same time, postal shipments do not replace traditional smuggling routes. Various transport methods can be used alongside each other.
The House of Representatives wants to know how big the problem is.
VVD MP Claire Martens-America submitted written questions to the Minister of Justice and Security and the State Secretary of Finance on August 4. With this, the matter has officially been placed on the political agenda.
The parliamentary questions are directly based on reports regarding drugs reaching the Netherlands via regular postal flows. The questions are registered under number 2026Z16669.
Consequently, the discussion revolves not only around interceptions, but also around the question of how the government, Customs, and parcel companies can better identify such shipments without making normal parcel traffic impossible.
The Netherlands has been seeing cannabis entering via packages for quite some time.
The fact that drugs are transported via mail is, incidentally, not entirely new. The National Overview of Drug Locations 2025 previously revealed that Customs intercepted approximately 65.000 kilos of cannabis. A large portion originated from North America and Thailand and reached the Netherlands via sea containers, air freight, passengers, and postal packages, among other means.
The new political debate primarily shows how flexible international drug networks are. If control on one route is strengthened, criminals can deploy various alternatives alongside each other.

As a result, the Dutch fight against drug smuggling no longer takes place solely in major ports and airports. The daily flow of millions of packages also forms part of the problem. Now that the House of Representatives is getting involved, it must become clearer how extensive this smuggling route actually is and what the Netherlands can do about it.
