Police have raided the largest indoor marijuana farm found in Hong Kong in a decade. It seized HK$45 million (180 million baht) in cannabis and arrested three men.

The arrests were made on Tuesday afternoon when officers raided the property after a weeks-long investigation. Two of the suspects entered the city illegally from mainland China and were hired to grow the drug at the 5000-square-foot farm in the New Territories, a source said.

“Investigations show that the two men came to the city from Zhuhai by speedboat about a month ago and paid more than HK$10.000 to work as farmers in the indoor cannabis farm,” the source said on Wednesday. He said the two men, both 52, also lived there to avoid their activities being discovered. The third suspect, a 49-year-old resident of Hong Kong, is said to have been in charge of the farm, according to the insider.

Police believe the suspects were recruited by a local drug organization. Chief Inspector Alan Chung, of the Kowloon West Crime Unit, said the plantation was located in a remote, sparsely populated area on Kam Shui South Road in Pat Heung.

“Within the property there were six large tents used to house different stages of cannabis plant growth,” he said. More than 600 marijuana plants were seized on the property, along with two kilograms of products ready for sale, plant-growing equipment and packaging equipment such as a vacuum sealer.
