2020-07-18-Jamaica unveils new cannabis standards for international export

Regulators have announced one of the major revisions to the rules for growing and processing cannabis this week since the legalization of medicinal cannabis in Jamaica in 2015.

The Bureau of Standards of Jamaica has released new rules for cannabis for medical, scientific and therapeutic use. Until now, hardly any quality control standards existed in the country. Farmers mainly relied on traditional growing methods that do not meet the strict quality control standards found in other cannabis markets.

International cannabis trade

The new regulation - which is part of a broader overhaul of cannabis regulation led by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, Agriculture and Fisheries - aims to reach the international cannabis industry to facilitate greater market access through exports.

“Although we are a locally based industry, we have a global focus,” said Floyd Green, the ministry's secretary of state. “We want to export our cannabis flowers and cannabis products all over the world. To do this, our cannabis products must be safe and meet the highest standards. ”

Quality control

Green pointed to quality control, consistency and compliance issues that hindered the island from unlocking its market potential. These regulatory shortcomings have long been a concern for industry stakeholders in Jamaica. In recent months, Jamaica has also seen the departure of international players, such as Canadian Aurora and the Green Organic Dutchman, over concerns about profitability.
