2019-04-17- Medical cannabis can bring money to Westland growers

Growers and nurseries in the Westland miss out on billions because they are not allowed to grow medicinal weed. If they get permission to grow weed, that could, they say, increase the yield of Westland growers five times to 40 billion. That is why they are asking Prime Minister Rutte for a change in legislation and regulations.

In our 'green' frog country, cannabis cultivation is punishable. However, billions are made in Canada and other parts of the world from the legal cultivation of cannabis. The Netherlands is at the forefront of the world when it comes to growing and growing in greenhouses. Everything here comes from the 'ground'. Many types of flowers and vegetables are successfully grown despite the changeable weather. Canada, where cannabis cultivation is legal, is therefore grateful to use our knowledge to make billions in the legal cannabis industry.

Competition in the horticultural sector

Moreover, there is a lot of competition from other countries, says Wouter Kuiper, director of a large greenhouse horticulture company. “We have overproduction and we face competition from fruit and vegetables from other countries. It is high time that we once again have a product that the Dutch grower can earn something from, ”he explains to the NOS. Grower Marco Smit adds: “We have many options here and all the knowledge in-house to make it a good product. The only challenge is the regulations. ”

Ban on renovation

If the cultivation of medicinal weed remains prohibited on a large scale, Dutch knowledge will disappear abroad as weed for the sun. To Canada and other countries where recreational use, cultivation and sale are legalized. The Netherlands, once known for its flexible drug policy, is getting out of step. That is why Dutch greenhouse builders, growers and light companies are looking for overseas.

Across the border

For example Peter Dekker Installations, which generates approximately 35% of its turnover in Canada. The company supplies screens to regulate the light in the greenhouses, among other things. Thanks to an optimal light intensity, the plants grow even faster. “We can do it, and it is such a shame that it cannot and should not be done in the Netherlands,” says co-owner Jan Vellekoop. Dutch expertise is desperately needed there. “However, it is difficult to work there: you have to take courses and have permits.

'Green light'

The growers hope today to receive the green light from Prime Minister Rutte for the cultivation of Mediette. At the moment, weed producer Bedrocan is the only large-scale, legal grower. The billion-dollar company, founded by Tjalling Erkelens, works on behalf of the government agency Medicinal Cannabis.
