2020-03-07-President Trump asks for extra money to regulate CBD and hemp

Hemp and CBD are getting attention from federal agencies in a 2021 budget plan released by President Donald Trump last week. Trump's proposal calls for an additional $5 million for the US Food and Drug Administration next fiscal year to regulate cannabis and its derivatives, including CBD.

The president also asked for more money to supervise hemp farmers. The budget requests come shortly after the legislation was introduced in Congress. This law includes an obligation for federal food and agricultural authorities to treat CBD as a dietary supplement.

That proposal came in response to the product's increasing popularity and the FDA's years of delay in developing regulations. The FDA began reviewing federal regulations for hemp-derived CBD last May after the 2018 Farm Bill was introduced. The $ 5 million increase in Trump's budget should help drive regulations for products containing CBD. The $ 5 million would be split between several FDA departments, including:

  • The Office of Regulatory Affairs ($ 2 million)
  • The Center for Veterinary Medicine ($ 500.000)
  • The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition ($ 2 million).
  • FDA headquarters ($ 500.000).

The 2021 budget also allocates $ 17 million to the US Department of Agriculture's national hemp production program.
