Almost one ton of MDMA seized
Spanish police have intercepted nearly one ton of MDMA during an international operation. According to the authorities, this is the largest seizure of the synthetic drug ever in Europe. The operation targeted a Dutch criminal network reportedly active on the Costa del Sol.
In total, 947 kilos of MDMA were found, hidden in a crane destined for transport to Ghana.
Exchange for cocaine
The investigation reveals that the MDMA was not intended for the European market. The drugs were to be transported via Ghana to South America, where the consignment would be exchanged for cocaine. That cocaine would then be smuggled back to Europe.
According to the Spanish police, international criminal organizations are increasingly using complex smuggling routes to circumvent controls and move drugs between different continents.
Fifteen arrests
During the operation, fifteen suspects were arrested in Spain and the Netherlands. In addition, the authorities seized firearms, cash, hash, and multiple cannabis plantations. The raids took place at various locations on the Costa del Sol, including Marbella, Fuengirola, and Estepona.
The operation was made possible thanks to a collaboration between the Spanish National Police and the Dutch police.
Investigation is ongoing
The Spanish authorities do not rule out further arrests. The investigation into the international network is still ongoing and should provide more clarity regarding the smuggling routes involved and the role of the various suspects.
