A special police operation at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has led to the arrest of thirteen suspected drug couriers reportedly linked to international smuggling networks. During the operation, authorities seized 260,08 kilograms of cannabis flowers and 1,01 kilograms of cocaine. According to the Malaysian police, the drugs represent a street value of approximately 21,3 million Malaysian ringgit, equivalent to over four million euros.
International smuggling networks in focus
The arrests were part of Op Khas KLIA, a targeted operation against international drug smuggling through Kuala Lumpur Airport. According to the police, a total of nine separate cases were investigated. Among the suspects are both Malaysian and foreign men and women aged between 18 and 53.
Investigators suspect that the suspects worked as couriers for international criminal organizations transporting drugs abroad via Malaysia. Authorities are still investigating who is behind the smuggling operations and which countries served as final destinations.
Cannabis intended for the foreign market
It is striking that Malaysia is increasingly being used as a transit country for international drug trafficking. According to the police, cannabis products intercepted via KLIA are often destined for markets in Europe, including the United Kingdom and France. Furthermore, recent figures show that the amount of drugs intercepted at the airport this year is nearly six times higher than in the same period last year.
Heavy punishments
All suspects are being prosecuted under the Malaysian Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Large-scale drug trafficking carries very severe penalties in Malaysia, including life imprisonment or – depending on the circumstances of the case – the death penalty. In addition, the judge may impose corporal punishment.
The police emphasize that checks at KLIA will be further tightened in the coming period. Following the recent discoveries, the airport has announced that it will pay more attention to detecting narcotics during baggage checks.
