Yesterday, Brazilian pharmaceutical regulator Anvisa approved regulations for the introduction of cannabis-based medicines.

These regulations and procedures contain requirements for importing medicinal products containing cannabis. It also concerns prescriptions for the prescription of medicinal cannabis, its sale and its supervision. Anvisa acts similar to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The adoption of rules to regulate the emerging medical marijuana market may shift Brazil's right-wing government.

Domestic cannabis plantations were banned under the regime of extreme right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro. According to Reuters, the country is not yet prepared to join Uruguay and Colombia to develop their own cannabis industry.

Import of cannabis products

An Anvisa spokesperson said that Brazilian companies may import semi-finished products from cannabis products, but not the cannabis plant itself or parts thereof. Anvisa has also established specific rules for the production, import, sale, packaging, marketing and regulation of products containing cannabis. It takes more than 90 days for these rules to apply.
