2020-03-05-Cannabis use is rising spectacularly in the Netherlands

For years, the Netherlands was known worldwide for its tolerance policy and tolerant attitude towards cannabis. However, full legalization of the cultivation, sale and use of medicinal and recreational cannabis in various countries reversed this image of the Netherlands. Nevertheless, 'Dutch weed' still reigns supreme in our little country. Figures from the National Drug Monitor of the Trimbos Institute and the Scientific Research and Documentation Center of the Ministry of Justice and Security show, for example.

Where in 2018 about 220.000 adults in the Netherlands used cannabis almost every day, this was only 140.000 a year earlier. The fact that drugs are very popular in the Netherlands is also evident from the fact that the use of cocaine, ecstasy and amphetamine is well above the European average. That cocaine 'snapping' does not only happen in Mexico is an understatement: cocaine use rose from 4,3 percent in 2015 to 5,4 percent of the Dutch in 2018. The port of Rotterdam in particular is considered an important transit port for large-scale drug trafficking.

Trends in drugs, tobacco and alcohol

Of course there are more trends to recognize. Below are some statistics: in Amsterdam the number of cafe visitors who had experience with nitrous oxide rose from 46 percent in 2014 to 62 percent in 2018. The percentage of excessive drinkers decreased and was 8,2 percent lower than in the previous years. In 2018, 224 people died from the direct effects of drug use. That is 38 less than in 2017. Smokers also decreased, respectively 22,4 percent in 2018 compared to 25,7 percent in 2014.
