That topic was recently the focus of the GreenTech edition of Innexo's Acceleration Day. During this event, cannabis producers, researchers, breeders, and technology companies came together to discuss the next phase of the international cannabis industry. One message clearly emerged: genetics is becoming increasingly important.

For years, the cannabis world revolved primarily around finding unique phenotypes, powerful effects, and distinctive aromas. Many growers relied on experience, selection, and traditional cultivation methods to achieve this. But now that the industry is becoming increasingly professional, the demand for stability, predictability, and consistent quality is also growing.


This is of great importance, especially within the medicinal cannabis industry. Patients and doctors expect a product today to have exactly the same properties as a product produced six months later. This means that cannabinoids, terpenes, growth characteristics, and yields must remain as consistent as possible.

According to various experts, cannabis is currently at the same point where other professional agricultural crops were decades ago. Crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and strawberries only became truly successful on a global scale after heavy investments were made in genetic breeding and research.

That same development now seems to be taking place within cannabis as well.


More and more companies are investing in genetic databases, phenohunting projects, stabilization programs, and modern breeding techniques. By selecting specific traits, growers can develop plants that are more resistant to diseases, yield higher harvests, grow faster, or produce a unique combination of cannabinoids and terpenes.

Genetics is becoming increasingly important for commercial growers as well. A stable genetic line means fewer risks during cultivation, fewer differences between plants, and ultimately a more reliable end product for consumers.

In addition, genetics plays a crucial role in the development of new cannabis products. As the market continues to grow, the demand for plants with specific characteristics is also increasing. Examples include strains with high CBD content, distinctive terpene profiles, unique flavors, or even new cannabinoids that have currently been barely researched.


According to many experts, the competitive struggle within the cannabis industry will increasingly shift to the genetic side of the market in the coming years. Whereas in the past the focus was primarily on growers and brands, in the future the focus will increasingly be on who possesses the most valuable genetic library.

We are already seeing this happen. Large international companies are investing millions in research, genetic selection, and intellectual property surrounding cannabis plants. For them, genetics is no longer a tool, but a strategic asset that can determine the future of their company.

This development is also growing rapidly within Europe. As more countries establish medicinal cannabis programs and regulations become more professionalized, the need for high-quality and consistent genetics is only increasing.


The conclusion of many experts is therefore clear: the next revolution in cannabis is not about stronger lights, larger farms, or more eye-catching packaging. The future of the industry begins with the genetic basis of the plant itself.

For ultimately, good genetics determines not only how a plant grows, but also how an industry develops.
