2020-07-09-Clever Leaves claims first EU GMP cannabis certification in Latin America

Clever Leaves, an international cannabis company with its main operations in Colombia, has the first EU Good Manufacturing Practice certification in Latin America. This certification allows the company to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), semi-finished and finished cannabis products for medical purposes in its Colombian factories.

The certification is expected to enhance Clever Leaves' ability to serve international markets.

Certification

EU GMP is an essential requirement for the export of medical marijuana - especially extracts - for commercial and medicinal purposes to markets in the European Union. “Every manufacturer of medicines destined for the EU market, wherever in the world they are located, must comply with GMP,” states the website of the European Medicines Agency.

A spokesperson for Clever Leaves told Marijuana Business Daily that the Croatian Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices inspected the company's facilities in Colombia in January and issued the certificate this week. Only a handful of cannabis facilities in the world have EU GMP certification to produce extracts.

As far as is known, this is the only cannabis producer with the conscious certificate for a cannabis facility in Latin America. Although the export of medical flowers with a high THC content to the European Union without EU GMP certification is possible under certain conditions, Colombia does not allow the export of flowers for commercial purposes. This leaves Colombian producers with little leeway other than obtaining EU certification if they want to export medicinal extracts produced from Colombia to the EU. Clever Leaves, meanwhile, is aiming for a listing on the Nasdaq stock market.
