2020-11-09-Corona hype? Young people flock to dangerous designer drugs 3-MMC

With the coronavirus being under for longer, boredom, fear and emotion increase. Drug use and addiction are therefore lurking. The latest hype is 3-MMC, a dangerous drug that can 'just' be used legally at the moment.

Designer drugs are produced by criminals trying to get around the law. By changing a molecule, a drug is suddenly no longer on the opium list and is therefore legal. We are working hard on a law that will restrict this gray area - and with it the production of designer drugs.

Cat

The drug is sold on the street as a cat. It is very similar to its big brother “Miauw, Miauw” (4-mmc), which is now on the Opium List. 3-MMC is seen as harmless by teenagers, but the drug is very similar to drugs such as ecstasy, cocaine and speed. People experience a euphoric high and become energetic and more confident. Yet there are many side effects such as high blood pressure, paranoia and overheating. Where years ago an increase in self-produced drugs such as GHB was seen, it is now these designer drugs that worries the police and the judiciary. Until the drugs are on the Opium List, the government is committed to raising awareness when it comes to health risks. In this way they hope to deter young people from trying the drug.

Drug use during corona

Although none yet scientific research is between COVID-19 and change in drug use there is a chance that corona will cause an increase in users. Today, many people are struggling with negative emotions, boredom and fear. The virus has a negative impact on people's mental health. Therefore, it is fair to imagine that more people will turn to drugs to get through this difficult period.
