2021-10-28-Designer drugs: say goodbye to 3-MMC

As of today, a ban on 3-MMC applies in the Netherlands. The dangerous and highly addictive designer drug – which was freely traded on the internet – is on List II of the Opium Act and is therefore officially banned. This means that production, trade and possession of this designer drug is punishable.

This decision had been in the air for a while after many stories of addicted young people came out. In the end, the drug even cost young human lives. The drug was easily legally available through a few smart shops and web stores.

Cheaper than coke

Easy availability wasn't the only benefit for many teens. The drug was a lot cheaper than cocaine, but had the same effect for only a tenner per gram. However, the side effects are not tender: an accelerated heartbeat, high blood pressure, huge headache and restless behavior. In addition, it is extremely addictive and often combined with other drugs or alcohol by many users.

Ban on designer drugs

However, this ban on 3-MMC is not Columbus' egg. The composition of dangerous designer drugs is continuously adjusted, so that the 'new' drug can temporarily be legally put on the market again. Until the drug reappears on the Opium List. For every substance that is banned, there is yet another drug on the shelves of drug manufacturers. That is why the outgoing cabinet is working on a broader ban on new psychoactive substances (NPS). This bans all designer drugs despite the composition.

Didn't really like 3-MMC much. I think it's a bit of an exaggeration. Think it would have been better to regulate it. Like all drugs should be regulated. Grapperhaus who creates crime by banning these types of resources. The question remains, who will fill that? Criminals, of course. Now without rules, VAT, etc.
