Holy smokes! Illegal cannabis farm in historic church

United Kingdom - Hundreds of cannabis plants have been found in a disused church in a small village in Staffordshire.

The former United Reform Church in Armitage, between Rugeley and Lichfield, had been converted into an industrial cannabis nursery.

More than 400 plants were found in a police raid, while air ducts, special lights, power banks and wooden frames were installed to help the plants grow.

A local resident Hazret M. has since been arrested and charged with producing drugs.

He appeared in court on Monday at the North Staffordshire Justice Center and was remanded in custody to face trial again today.

The church, next to the Croft Primary School on Rugeley Road, is a Grade I listed building from 1820, but has not been used as a place of worship for over 20 years.

Chief Inspector Mark Smith, who is based in Lichfield with the Staffordshire Police, commended his officers for confiscating the cannabis, adding: “I am glad this capture did not end up on the streets and is now under our care. Top work by the sergeant and colleagues. ”

A Staffordshire police spokeswoman said: “Hazret M., 31, of Rugeley Road, Armitage, has been accused of producing a controlled class B drug after officers discovered nearly 400 cannabis plants in a church in Rugeley on Friday. ”

"He's been taken into custody until his next court appointment."
