Rehab from weed, how hard can it be?

Weed doesn't immediately make us think of addiction. Alcohol, cocaine and painkillers, you have to watch out with that, but isn't weed harmless? Blowing has a relaxing effect, your creativity takes flight and you don't actually hurt a fly. Then nothing can go wrong, right?

Yet there are about 70.000 Dutch people in trouble with their excessive use of weed. They are addicted and a day without it is not an option. Without marijuana, you feel bad. Participating in society is then hardly possible, sometimes you don't even get out of bed.

Even under the influence of cannabis, that daily life is getting worse; you procrastinate, you no longer live up to your obligations and you struggle with relationships. The next step in the downward spiral is to stop work and / or study, whether forced or not. Your life deteriorates and you end up in isolation. In short, a cannabis addiction is definitely “a thing” and in some cases it has withdraw from weed necessary.

The psychic aspects of a weed addiction

A weed addiction is psychological in nature, it takes place under your brain. It is your own brain that tells you that smoking a smoke is really a good idea, even if you might prefer not to. The moment you want to cut down or stop, a battle starts against yourself. If you make a mistake and still light a joint again, it can cause a considerable feeling of guilt. Realizing that you have little control over your cannabis use can take a big blow to your self-confidence. Time to really work on quitting.

Fortunately, you will not get any physical complaints if you stop smoking. A weed addiction is not of a physical nature. That makes a difference, because physical withdrawal symptoms are not only annoying, but can also turn out to be life-threatening. Alcoholics know all about it, a heavy drinker who suddenly stops can experience life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. That will save you at least when you stop using weed.

Why am I actually blowing?

At certain clear moments you know exactly why you want to stop smoking. At other times you are fooling yourself and all of a sudden it is not too bad with that smoking and it cannot hurt. Therefore, during such an honest moment, write why you smoke cannabis and what (negative) consequences it has for your life. Refer to this list when you are having a hard time and toying with the idea of buying weed or hash again. Such a list can really help you not to make mistakes again.

Weed withdrawal, withdrawal or “cold turkey”?

It is up to you how you want to stop. Some ex-addicts swear by suddenly quitting completely, the so-called “cold turkey method† That will be difficult at first, because your brain will not agree that the supply of THC suddenly stops. Sleeping can also become a problem. If you are tossing and turning in your bed, the temptation is very great to smoke weed and fall asleep like that. Quitting cold turkey requires a lot of self-discipline!

The alternative is to phase out. It has certain advantages. You prepare your brain slowly for a life without weed. The shock is less severe. Some discipline is still required, because what do you do when you suddenly find yourself in a situation where there is a lot of blowing? Do you then have the backbone to say no if your friends offer you a joint lift?

What often happens is that the zero point is never reached. The use is decreasing but you continue to take cannabis every day. Over time, usage increases again and you have not made any progress on balance.

Can't stop it? There is help!

It is not reserved for everyone to rehab. That in itself is not a shame, we are all differently organized. Professional help is now your best option. There are plenty of options and every Dutch person gets the opportunity to kick the habit. Your mandatory health insurance policy basically pays for the costs.

You usually end up at a rehab clinic through the doctor. This sounds quite dramatic because most people associate rehab with some kind of covert prison. This is not entirely accurate as most rehab clinics are comfortable and there is a positive atmosphere. Spending a while there is no punishment!

Then just a rehab clinic?

Incidentally, a stay in a rehab clinic is sometimes not even an issue. With a cannabis addiction you will not be admitted 1-2-3, certainly not if you (still) participate in society, study, work, etc. You will probably be offered a number of therapies with which you gain insight into your own behavior. What's behind your addiction?

These insights will help you to turn the button and stop definitively. Such conversations are by appointment and afterwards you just go home. The doctors with whom you discuss your problems are all highly educated, know the material and know how to deal with a weed addict like no other.

Ultimately, there are many methods of drug addiction and there is always one that best suits your specific situation. Smoking a joint every now and then might not hurt, but don't let it get out of hand. If you feel that you are not in control of your use, ring the bell and report to your doctor.
