A London university has launched a £2,5 million study into the effects of cannabis on the brain. The Cannabis & Me study will investigate biological factors behind the different effects people experience from using cannabis.

King's College London wants 6.000 people to participate in the study, which is the largest independent study would be of its kind. Researchers said funding from the Medical Research Council would help develop a better understanding of the drug, which is estimated to be used by 200 million people around the world.

Interaction between cannabis and the brain

More research is needed on how cannabis interacts with the brain. “Medical cannabis prescribing remains rare in the UK. “Our study aims to provide data and tools that can give doctors in the UK and around the world more confidence, where appropriate, in prescribing marijuana safely,” said lead researcher Dr Di Forti. “It is consumed daily by many recreationally as well as for medicinal reasons.”

Organic composition

The aim is to understand the relationship between a user's biological makeup and the effect cannabis has on him or her. Researchers will use a combination of virtual reality, psychological and cognitive analysis, and DNA testing. They will also look at epigenetics in participants: how behavior and environment can influence the way genes work.

dr. Di Forti said she was particularly interested in uncovering any markers associated with potential problems in users, such as mental health or social problems. The team is looking for participants aged 18-45 who live in the London area, who are currently using cannabis or have used it less than three times or never before. The first step for participants is to complete a 40-minute survey online.
