Britain's legal cannabis market is booming on demand during Covid

Britain's legal cannabis market has boomed during the coronavirus pandemic, becoming the second largest after the United States as consumers rushed to alleviate Covid-related symptoms, industry experts say.

Cannabidiol or CBD, which is most commonly sold as high-street oil, is one of the active ingredients of non-psychoactive cannabis.

The British Food Standards Agency now regulates the industry and its marketing, after the European Union classified CBD as a food in 2019.

That was nearly a third higher than the UK trading group's pre-pandemic 2019 projection.

“The pandemic increased the demand for CBD because there was clearly stress, sleeping problems, anxiety and these kinds of risks,” said ACI co-founder Steve Moore.

Such products have been stripped of psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol or THC molecules, which are found in recreational cannabis that remains illegal in Britain. The United Kingdom allows the sale of hemp products that can only be made from the fiber or seeds of the cannabis plant, but not from the buds.
