The Health Committee of the London Assembly has called on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to take a new approach to tackling drug deaths.
The Health Committee of the London Assembly released a new report on Thursday calling on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to work with the government and police to take a new approach to tackling deaths from drugs in the capital.
Thousands of drug deaths in England and Wales
Deaths from drug abuse are very high in England and Wales. Nearly 2020 people died here from drug abuse in 3000, 296 of which were in London. That is why the health agency now wants to conduct a pilot with specially equipped rooms where drugs can be taken under medical supervision to prevent overdoses.
Testing drugs at events
The report also wants drug controls at London venues and events so that users can test the potency and content of any substances they may intend to use. Caroline Russell, chair of the Assembly's health committee, said such measures could reduce the growing number of people losing their lives as a result of problem drug use.
