MANILA - Medical cannabis is a better medicine for patients suffering from seizures, cancer and other illnesses because it is “less toxic” compared to other treatments, experts said Friday, as lawmakers continued to legalize medical marijuana use in the Philippines discuss.
Studies showed that there were no recorded deaths from marijuana in the past 5.000 years, Dr. Donnabel Cunanan, Filippine Cannabis Compassion Society, told ANC's Early Edition.
“The good thing about medical marijuana is that it has less toxicity to the organs and there is no fatal overdose.

Cunanan has advocated the legalization of cannabis as a medicine, claiming that this is the best treatment for her 9-year-old daughter who has suffered epileptic seizures since her childhood.
"She has over 100 seizures a day and that's why it's so depressing on our part as a parent, that's why we're looking for alternative options," she said.
“We have tried about 7 anti-epileptic drugs. None of these drugs really worked for my child and that's why she has worldwide developmental delay and cerebral palsy, ”she said.
Most cancers and anti-seizure drugs available in the Philippines have negative effects on children, said Dr. Chuck Manansala of the Medical Cannabis Research Center.
"A lot of kids are on very, very strong drugs that prevent them from functioning and cause overall developmental delay, but that doesn't happen with cannabis," Manansala said.
Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was the author of a bill to legalize the plant, which is still considered an illegal drug in the Philippines. She recently admitted using a “marijuana-based soothing pain relief solution” while not in the Philippines to relieve her spine pain.
