2018-12-18-Investigation of weed exemption Tilburg is not yet finished: foreigners can also visit coffee shops at the beginning of 2019

Foreigners can still visit the Tilburg coffee shops after 1 January. It has been agreed with the coffee shop owners that enforcement will not be enforced until the evaluation of the experiment on the 'weed exemption' has been completed, says the spokesman for Mayor Weterings.

That evaluation is expected from 2019 in the first quarter. This should show the effects of releasing the resident criterion (only residents of the Netherlands are allowed to buy weed in a coffee shop) in the city and the streets around the coffee shops.

Illegal circuit

Based on this, Tilburg decides whether or not the shops can continue to sell to foreigners. Under the mayor Noordanus, that only happened during a few major festivals. He wanted to prevent visitors in the illegal circuit from looking for cannabis.

Since 1 March last, foreigners were allowed to buy cannabis again at Tilburg coffee shops on a trial basis. Mayor Weterings extended the experiment, which was due to end in October, until January 1, 2019 because Bureau Intraval needed more time to properly measure the effects. The research therefore takes even more time.

Weterings can formally take any decision for a definitive 'weed exemption' itself. "But the mayor wants to discuss this with the city council and thinks that his decision should be supported by the council," said the spokesman.
