The Spanish authorities have a mega cannabis plantation rolled up† 415.000 hemp plants worth up to 100 million euros ($108 million) have been destroyed. It is the largest cannabis plantation in Europe.
About 50 tons of the plants were dried in a warehouse for processing into cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound increasingly used to treat anxiety, insomnia and other ailments.
Illegal cannabis plantation
The plantation was located in the northern region of Navarre and had a combined area of 67 hectares (166 acres) spread over eleven fields. Three people were arrested in the operation, which began in mid-2021. The Guardia Civil said the plantation owner initially presented the farm as a legal operation to produce industrial cannabis, but it later emerged that there were plans to export large quantities to Italy and Switzerland for processing into CBD.
Cannabis cultivation prohibited for consumption
While the sale and consumption of CBD is legal throughout Spain and most of Europe, Spanish law still prohibits the cultivation of cannabis plants for anything other than industrial use, such as for textiles and seeds, the Ministry of Agriculture said.
