2021-12-24-Thai ministry wants cannabis on UNESCO heritage list

The Thai Ministry of Culture plans to put Thai cannabis on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The ministry claims that cannabis is used as a spice and part of the culture in all regions of the country.

The Deputy Director General of the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Department explains the government's strategy to bring global attention to Thailand's emerging cannabis industry.

UNESCO cannabis

The first step to be added to the UNESCO list is a registration of a 'National Wisdom Heritage' of Thailand. That would mean that there are thirty species cannabis from Thailand are collected and registered, which the Ministry of Culture plans to do by March 2022. After that, the way will be cleared for Thailand to apply to be added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage by 2023.
The plan may have been inspired by Thailand's success in 2019, when the Ministry of Culture teamed up with the Ministry of Health to successfully petition UNESCO for Thai massage to be included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Cultural expressions experienced by communities as heritage give a sense of identity and continuity.
