More and more people are using psychedelics on a therapeutic basis to process traumas or combat feelings of depression. This includes former cyclist Thomas Dekker, who has struggled with depressed feelings for years. To get rid of that, he uses a controversial tool: truffles.

Although psychedelics are not yet widely accepted, there is increasing research into its effect on PTSD, depression or addiction. The Dutch researcher Joost Breeksema has been arguing for the use of psychedelics in psychiatry for years.

What do psychedelics do like truffles?

“Many different things can happen,” says researcher Joost Breeksema about the therapeutic use of psychedelic drugs such as truffles. “It may be that people gain insights into themselves. That they face what they struggle with. They can get a different perspective on their situation, for example. An important risk to mention is that it can also get worse. Because it strengthens things that are present in you.”

Taking psychedelics under supervision and in conjunction with therapy can really help people. Thomas Dekker: “I wear earphones and a mask, so it's always dark. It wouldn't work without music either. What I think is very important is that you do it under supervision, but also guidance with good intentions.”
