Twitter on Wednesday updated its advertising policies to allow ads for marijuana and CBD to run on the platform in states where marijuana is legal.

The policy represents the biggest step forward a major technology company has made to allow cannabis advertising in places where use and sale is legal.

Cannabis Policy Google

Google last month updated its policy to allow ads for FDA-approved drugs and products containing CBD and with THC levels of 0,3% or less in California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. However, many online media are still off-limits to cannabis and CBD products. The advertisements that Twitter accepts must also meet certain requirements. This is evident from a policy update of the blue bird.

CBD and THC companies can post ads to promote their brands and provide informative content. However, the advertisements may not promote or offer the sale of cannabis with the exception of CBD products with less than 0,3 percent THC. Twitter only accepts advertisers who are licensed by the appropriate authorities and pre-authorized by the company.

Advertisers may only target geographic areas in the US where they are licensed to post online cannabispromote products or services and may not target Twitter users under the age of 21. They are responsible for complying with all applicable laws and regulations related to marketing.
In its blog post announcing the update, Twitter said, “We look forward to helping more customers harness the power of Twitter advertising, join the cannabis conversation and advance their business. As for the impact on the cannabis industry, let's just say we have high expectations.”
