The Warsaw Zoo announced this week that it is conducting an experiment with CBD oil producer Dobrekonopie. “We have started a project testing the effect of CBD hemp oils on the mood of our animals,” the statement read.
The experiment begins with the African elephant Fredzia, who, after the recent death of Erna - the former head of the elephant herd - was a little stressed and struggling to find her position in the herd.
The oil - which has no psychoactive properties - will be administered to two African elephants in total: Fredzi and Buba. Warsaw Zoo Zookeeper Patryk Pyciński explained in a video posted on Facebook that elephants can struggle for months or even years with the loss of a herd member. Elephants are known for their 'elephant memory' for a reason.
Agnieszka Czujkowska, a veterinarian at the Warsaw Zoo who is leading the project, said CBD has already been used successfully in dogs and horses. They hope it will also work positively in elephants as an alternative to medication.
