E-cigarette users may be at greater risk than non-smokers of developing infections and inflammatory conditions of the lungs, including a severe form of covid.
The findings come from a American study among 45 non-smokers, 30 vapers and 29 tobacco smokers. The vapers and smokers were found to have higher levels of blood plasma proteins that the virus needs to survive.
Researcher Dr. Theodoros Kelesidis: “Smoking remains the most serious, but vaping is certainly not harmless. It's a new, interesting finding that vaping altered the levels of key proteins the virus uses to replicate. Vapes should only be used for short-term use to stop smoking.”
