Weed is sadness. A saying that has increasingly trickled down into the circuit of illegal cannabis growers in recent years. In recent years, the Dutch police has taken increasingly tougher action against growers. The stricter policy is bearing fruit, namely fewer illegal cannabis farms, but also has a dangerous downside: the rise of synthetic cannabis and drug crime among Dutch people across the border. Legalization of cultivation and sale appears to be the only way to limit the risks to public health and crime.

“They used to take your hemp, you got a fine or a prison sentence. Now they throw you out of the rented house with your whole family, they seize your car, TV and jewelry and the tax authorities also send a big additional tax, ”a criminal source from RTL Boulevard shows.

End of the Dutch liberal drug policy

As a result, growers of the green gold are looking for it across borders, in countries such as Spain and Poland. A strange development says crime journalist Kees van der Spek in RTL Boulevard: “For years, the Netherlands was a world leader when it comes to weed, but the tide is turning. We are 10 rounds behind America where you can buy medicinal and recreational weed and growers - controlled by the government - produce cannabis on a large scale. It is the bankruptcy of the Dutch free, liberal drug policy. ”

Spice

However, the fact that the Netherlands is lagging behind when it comes to legalization of cannabis also entails major risks. Growers not only look abroad, but sometimes switch to the production of synthetic cannabis under the name spice. “Spice was developed by an American professor in the 80s as a kind of research stuff. Then it ended up in China and now it is slowly spreading across the world ”, says van der Spek. However, this heavy, synthetic drug is much more dangerous than 'regular' weed and has fatalities.

When asked what the solution is, Van der Spek answers wholeheartedly: “Just legalize cannabis, but also its supply. You can sell in Dutch coffee shops, but you are not allowed to deliver. That is madness of course! ”
