Weed trial is a big fiasco

by Team Inc.

It is clear that the Dutch cabinet leaves much to be desired. This also applies to the weed test that is now being postponed for the umpteenth time.

Five years after its announcement, the weed test still not off the ground. The experiment was presented with much fanfare in 2017 and it would become state-owned weed. Weed would be grown and sold under government supervision. This would not only limit the black market, but also guarantee a certain quality. Moreover, it might offer a solution for the controversial back door policy. The backward tolerance policy that allows cannabis to be sold, but not cultivated.

Strict criteria

Nothing turns out to be less true. At first it was the strict criteria that prevented many coffee shops and municipalities from taking the test. Including the big cities. Then there were problems with the growers, payment systems and banks. It has now become known that it is still not possible to start the experiment in a number of selected municipalities. It seems to be early 2024. 7 years after announcement. What a letdown!

From weed trial to weed flop

It is clear that the Netherlands, once seen as a progressive country, has missed the boat when it comes to legalization. In America and Canada, cannabis is rampant, from which the government also benefits considerably. And legalization seems to be going better in other countries as well. For example in Germany. This while we are still here with a simple test that never seems to succeed.
