Many of the negative symptoms associated with menopause — increased stress, poor sleep, joint pain, headaches, and anxiety — are said to be alleviated by CBD. So it's no surprise that the two are associated with each other.

Currently, there is little solid scientific research to support the links between CBD and menopausal symptom relief, although some studies consider it effective for pain relief in general. Much evidence is anecdotal.

Hot flashes and anxiety

Dr. Shirin Lakhani, an expert on intimate health and menopause, tells us, “While research is ongoing, there is some evidence that cannabidiol could be beneficial for the health of women. Research suggests that it may reduce hot flashes and night sweats. It can also help with mood swings, irritability and fatigue.”

Jon Robson, the founder of Mamedica, the UK's leading medical cannabis clinic, agrees. Especially when it comes to dealing with symptoms like hot flashes and anxiety. He explains: “A 2018 study published in the journal Gynecological Endocrinology found that CBD was effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of hot flashes in menopausal women. Another study published in 2020 in the journal Maturitas found that CBD was effective in improving sleep and reducing anxiety in women at this stage of their lives.”

CBD works by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating several physiological processes, including mood, sleep, and stress responses. CBD can help regulate the ECS and reduce anxiety by activating serotonin receptors in the brain.

Discuss complaints with a healthcare provider

While CBD has potential benefits for menopausal women, it's important to talk to a healthcare provider. CBD can interact with other medications or have other possible side effects. For some people going through menopause or perimenopause, introducing CBD into their routines has been a real game-changer.

It is important to remember that any supplement or remedy should complement a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Lakhani: “I would recommend making sure you get plenty of rest and stick to sleep routines, even if this is difficult because you suffer from menopausal insomnia.”

“I would also recommend eating a healthy, balanced diet with calcium-rich foods to keep bones healthy. I am also a big fan of mechanical lymphatic massage, which helps detoxify the body and can help reduce water retention, sluggishness and brain fog.”
