A flock of sheep near the town of Almyros in Thessaly, Greece, recently devoured almost 100kg of medicinal cannabis grown in a greenhouse. The sheep took refuge after the floods caused by Storm Daniel that hit Greece, Libya, Turkey and Bulgaria.

Because many plains near Thessaly were also flooded, there was little fresh grass to be found for the animals. After some wandering around, the sheep and damaged greenhouse arrived full of medical weed. When their shepherd found them later, he noticed that the sheep were behaving strangely.

Cannabis legalization

Marijuana has been legal in Greece for medicinal purposes since 2017. In 2023, the country opened its very first medical cannabis production plant. The cultivation of cannabis for medical use has provided much-needed economic opportunities for the country. The province grew and exported cannabis before its possession was banned in 1936.

Several countries, including Britain, Germany, Italy and Denmark, allow prescribing medicinal weed and Canada became the second country in the world after Uruguay to fully legalize marijuana, ending a ninety-year ban.
