Italy has seized more than 5.300 kilos of cocaine in the Mediterranean Sea southwest of Sicily. It is the largest drug bust ever in the country, according to the financial investigation service and also one of the largest in the world. The Mediterranean Sea is an important supply route.
The drugs have a street value of around $850 million. Five people have been arrested. They are an Italian, two Tunisians, a Frenchman and an Albanian. The cocaine was transferred to a small fishing boat from a large merchant ship that had been moored at the edge of Italian territorial waters for several days. Under the watchful eye of the investigative services that have been keeping a close eye on this suspicious ship for some time.
Both ships were subsequently intercepted. The packages with drugs were found in a secret room on board the fishing boat. The merchant ship is on its way to the port of Palermo, accompanied by the navy.
