Studies show that cannabis is better than toothpaste when it comes to stopping cavities

Cannabinoids also have the potential to prevent the rise of antibiotic-resistant infections.

A study published in the January issue of the Cureus Journal of Medical Science concluded that specific cannabinoids found in marijuana — namely CBD, CBC, CBN, CBG and CBGA — were better at eradicating colonies of bacteria than toothpaste brands like Oral B. , Colgate, and Cannabite F (a plant-based toothpaste), reports Mary Jane.

"Cannabinoids can be used as an effective antibacterial agent against plaque-associated bacteria," researchers wrote in the paper. "In addition, it provides a safer alternative to synthetic antibiotics to reduce the development of drug resistance."

To test their hypothesis, researchers took plaque samples from 60 healthy people and subjected them to a solution containing a mix of one of the five cannabinoids or one of the popular toothpaste brands. The cannabis-infused blends stopped bacterial growth better than the store-bought brands or controls used in the study.

“While commercially available oral care products are significantly effective in maintaining oral hygiene in the average population, our study found that cannabinoids are significantly effective in reducing the number of plaque bacterial strains colonies compared to established synthetic oral products. personal care products such as Oral B and Colgate, ”said researchers.

The use of cannabinoids has the added benefit of preventing the emergence of antibiotic-resistant infections such as MRSA.

Unfortunately, the study has some limitations, as researchers did not perform a statistical analysis of their data. And, as they point out, everyone's mouth has a different microbiotic makeup - including different types of bacteria - that makes drawing conclusions more dangerous in general.

But the results will no doubt be food for thought for Colgate, which recently acquired Hello Products, an eco-friendly company that sells a variety of vegan toothpastes and mouthwashes, some of which already contain hemp seed oil.

Millennial and Gen Z consumers are becoming increasingly picky for their daily products as they look at the environmental impact of the production process, forcing companies to take steps to reduce their CO2 footprint and look for new plant options.

Colgate launched its first “vegan-certified” toothpaste earlier this month.
